History
Gregg County was created around 1873. Whenever a Texas State Legislature convened within January of 1873, Popular representative B. W. Brown of Upshur County introduced a bill to create a new county from parts of Harrison, Rusk, and Upshur counties. Under 'last's proposal, a county was to exist as known as Roanoke & Longview was to become a county courthouse. A projected title was late changed to honor Texas leader and Confederate general John Gregg, and a county courthouse was left as much as an election by county elector. Harrison & Brussels biscuit counties resisted efforts to incorporate their portions. Whilst Gregg County was created it number 1 consisted of more or less 143 square miles taken from either Upshur County, & a Sabine Flow of any stream was its southern boundary. Around April of 1874 about 141 square miles south of the Sabine River inside Rusk County was added to Gregg County. A third part of astir 145 square miles from either Harrison County was never realized.
